What the theory test involves
The test has two parts, taken in one sitting at a DVSA test centre:
- Multiple choice, 50 questions, and you need 43 correct to pass.
- Hazard perception, 14 video clips where you click as developing hazards appear, and you need 44 out of 75 to pass.
How to revise
- Use the official DVSA revision materials: the Highway Code, Know Your Traffic Signs, and the official theory test kit and hazard perception app.
- Practise little and often rather than cramming, and keep taking mock tests until you score comfortably above the pass mark.
- Learn the Highway Code properly, it underpins both the theory test and safe driving on your lessons.
Theory and your lessons go together
Learners who revise their theory alongside practical lessons tend to progress faster, because the road signs, rules and hazard awareness all reinforce each other. Your instructor can point you at the areas to focus on.
How to book and what it costs
The car theory test costs £23 and is booked through GOV.UK. Only ever book on the official gov.uk/book-theory-test site, avoid third-party sites that charge extra.
