Do you need your theory test first?
No. You can start lessons straight away, and many learners take lessons while they revise. You do need to pass the theory test before you can book your practical driving test. See our theory test guide for how to pass first time.
You must meet the eyesight standard
You need to be able to read a car number plate from 20 metres, wearing glasses or contact lenses if you normally use them. Your instructor will check this at the start of your first lesson.
You must be fit to drive
Come to lessons well rested and never under the influence of alcohol or drugs. You must also tell the DVLA about certain medical conditions that can affect driving, the current list is on GOV.UK.
You need a provisional driving licence
You must hold a valid UK provisional driving licence before your first lesson. You can apply once you are 15 years and 9 months old, and you can start driving a car at 17 (or 16 if you receive the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP). Apply on the official site at gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence.
