You must pass the theory test before you can book your practical, so the sooner you get it done, the sooner you can work toward your test date. The good news: with steady preparation, most learners pass first time.
What’s in the theory test
There are two parts, and you need to pass both on the same day:
- Multiple choice: 50 questions on the Highway Code, road signs and safe driving. You need 43 correct to pass.
- Hazard perception: 14 video clips where you click as developing hazards appear. You need 44 out of 75.
How to prepare
- Use the official DVSA app and books, the questions are drawn from the same bank.
- Study a little and often rather than cramming, 20 minutes a day beats one long session.
- Practise hazard perception clips specifically, the clicking technique takes getting used to.
- Read the Highway Code alongside your practical lessons so theory and real driving reinforce each other.
