Help & answers

FAQs

Common questions about lessons, prices, booking and passing your test with City Side. If you cannot find what you are looking for, give us a call or drop us a message and we will get straight back to you, usually the same day.

Booking, prices and paying

Are automatic lessons really the same price as manual?

They are. Many schools charge more for automatic, but we keep the price identical either way, with no booking fee.

How do I pay for lessons?

You can book and pay online for a block of hours, which works out cheaper per lesson, or pay lesson by lesson. A small deposit secures your booking and comes straight off your total.

Is there a booking fee?

No. There is no booking fee and no hidden extras. You pay for your lessons and nothing more.

Theory and driving tests

Which test centre will I use?

Most of our learners test at Goodmayes or Wanstead, depending on where they live. Our instructors teach those routes in detail so you go in fully prepared.

How long is the wait for a driving test?

Waits across East London are long at the moment, often 20 weeks or more at busy centres like Goodmayes. We recommend booking your test early and building your lessons around it, and asking about intensive courses.

Do you help with the theory test?

Yes, we guide you through theory preparation and point you to the official DVSA materials and apps. You will need to pass your theory before you can book your practical test.

Do I need a provisional licence before I start?

Yes, you must hold a valid UK provisional licence before your first lesson. Apply early on GOV.UK, as it can take a couple of weeks to arrive.

Can I use my instructor's car for the test?

Usually yes, with a warm up lesson beforehand to settle your nerves. It means you sit the test in a car you already know.

What if I fail my test?

Many learners come to us after a previous attempt. We look honestly at what cost you the marks and focus your next lessons there, so you go back stronger.

Lessons and instructors

Do you offer both manual and automatic lessons?

Yes, we teach in both manual and automatic cars, and they cost exactly the same hourly rate. There is no automatic premium, so you can choose the gearbox that suits you rather than the cheaper one.

Do you have female instructors?

Yes, we have both male and female DVSA approved instructors, so you can learn with someone you feel comfortable beside. Let us know your preference when you book.

I have never driven before, can I still start?

Absolutely. Most of our learners start as complete beginners. Your instructor builds everything up step by step, at a pace that suits you, with dual controls fitted for complete safety.

How many lessons will I need?

The DVSA suggests most learners need around 45 hours of lessons plus some private practice, but it is different for everyone. After your first couple of lessons we will give you an honest estimate.

Can you pick me up?

Yes, we offer free collection and drop off from home, work or college anywhere across our covered areas, so none of your lesson time is wasted.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover East London across the E and IG postcodes, from Stratford, Ilford and Barking to Canary Wharf and beyond. Check your postcode on any of our area pages, or ask us.

Do you run intensive courses?

Yes. Intensive or crash courses compress your training into a focused block of days or weeks, which is a popular way to get test ready fast given the long local waits.

Do you offer refresher lessons?

Yes, if you already hold a licence but have been off the road, refresher lessons rebuild your confidence. Take as few or as many hours as you need.

How soon can I start?

Usually within a few days. Book online or call and we will match you with a local instructor as quickly as we can.
