Instructor Training Program
To become a qualified instructor, you must pass three tests conducted by the Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA).
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3
Theory and Hazard Perception Exams
The ADI Theory and Hazard Perception Test follows a similar format to the standard learner driver theory test. It consists of two parts:
Part 1: 100 multiple-choice questions focused on driving instruction knowledge.
Part 2: A hazard perception section featuring 14 video clips designed to assess your ability to identify developing hazards on the road.
Theory and Hazard Perception Exams
The ADI Part 2 test closely mirrors the learner driver’s practical driving test. It includes an eyesight check and an assessment of your ability to drive to a high standard.
The driving exam lasts approximately one hour, and you must not exceed six minor faults to pass.
Driving Instruction Skills Test
ADI Part 3 assesses your teaching ability.
You’ll be scored on 17 areas across three key skills: lesson planning, risk management, and client-focused teaching. The test ensures you can deliver safe, effective, and learner-centred driving lessons, demonstrating clear communication, structured guidance, and the ability to adapt to individual learner needs.
Full details of the three tests are available on the DVSA website.
